About this tour
Visit our very own Palace of the Sun, Grianan Aileach, a majestic stone fort built in the 1st century on the site of an earlier Iron Age settlement. This ancient structure, with its rich history and mythological significance, is aligned with the movements of the sun and the moon, offering visitors a profound connection to the past. From its elevated position, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views over Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly, making it a perfect spot for photography and reflection.
After absorbing the historical and natural beauty of Grianan Aileach, we continue our journey to the enchanting Glenevin Waterfall in Clonmany. This serene waterfall, nestled in a lush glen, cascades down into a crystal-clear pool, providing a picturesque setting for a leisurely walk. Along the way, we’ll take a delightful tea stop at a cozy local café, where you can relax and enjoy some refreshments.
Next, we head to the impressive Dunree Fort, a military fortress perched on a cliffside with commanding views of Lough Swilly. Here, you’ll embark on a guided tour that delves into the fort’s strategic significance and its role in Irish history. The combination of dramatic landscapes and rich military heritage makes this a memorable and educational stop.
Our adventure continues to the Doagh Famine Village, where you’ll join a guided tour that brings Irish social history to life. Through immersive exhibits and storytelling, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the Great Famine and the resilience of the Irish people. This experience is both poignant and enlightening, providing valuable insights into Ireland’s past.
Finally, we journey to Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head. Known for its breathtaking scenery, Malin Head offers dramatic coastal views, rugged cliffs, and the chance to witness the raw beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. EXCELLENTBased on 4 reviewsVerifiedColleen T2022-09-16So. Much. Fun. Amanda is amazing. Great tour guide. Lots of history. Local lore. We had a blast. She really knows her stuff, and where the really good places are hiding.VerifiedTara M2022-06-10Walking tour Amanda has intimate knowledge of letterkenny’s history and an enthusiastic delivery that makes the information even more excitingVerifiedAlice S2020-03-04Lovely tour of Donegal sites Had a very enjoyable tour with guide Amanda and driver Sean despite site closures and crazy weather. Slieve League was gorgeous as well as many of the other sites we stopped at including Irish Coffee at the The Rusty Mackerel and a fabulous lunch at Michael & Angelos. Both Amanda and Sean were knowledgeable regarding the sites and history of the area. I was visiting the area for work and was very pleased to find this tour allowed a solo booking. Amanda and Sean made it a very informative and enjoyable tour. I was picked up from my hotel at 9am and we didn’t return until after 6pm. I felt like I was being shown around by friends who have a love and appreciation for the place in which they live and would recommend this tour to others. Definitely felt it was worth the price!VerifiedBarbara S2019-07-20Day trip around Inishowen We stayed in Letterkenny for 2 days. On the first day, we drove via Ramelton to Rathmullen (lovely beaches), and then onwards to Fanad lighthouse - beautiful views! On the way back via Portsalon (phantastic beach!). On second day, we took the car ferry from Rathmullen to Buncrana (very nice way to travel!), and toured around Inishowen, up to Malin Head, the most northerly point in ireland with phantastic views). We were lucky to have glorious weather, and the landscape of Donegal is just stunning!
